Microsoft OneNote (Students): How to Use OneNote for the INT 2840 RFP Assignment

OneNote is a digital binder.  It allows you to organize content into various tabs and pages as you would a physical binder.  In INT 2840 Systems Analysis and Project Management, you will use OneNote to submit your final request for proposal (RFP) assignment to your professor.  This knowledge article explains how to download the OneNote desktop application and provides resources on how to use OneNote using a PC (Mac instructions are similar).  No purchase is necessary for you to acquire OneNote for your personal computer, while you are a student at the college.  Instructions are provided below for how to get Microsoft Office, which includes OneNote, if you don't already have it and how to take the next steps to create, share, and add content to your OneNote notebook.

Step 1

Download Microsoft Office free of charge by visiting the link that applies to your system:

Your group's project manager should create a OneNote notebook to share with your group.  Continue with the steps to learn how.

Step 2

Open OneNote and sign into your account after creating an Outlook.com email account if you don't already have one.  This is a great time to create an email account that is appropriate for applying for jobs or for use on college applications.  All group members will need an Outlook.com email account.

NOTE: Do not use your PGCC student email and password to login as you will experience issues sharing the Notebook with your professor.

Sign in to Office

Step 3

Enter your Outlook.com email password and click Sign in.

Enter password and sign in

Step 4

Confirm that you are logged in by maximizing OneNote (if it minimized after logging in) and ensuring that your login information is reflected in the Account tab.

Step 6

If you are ready to share your notebook, select the option to Invite People.  If not, select Not Now.

If you select Not Now, you can share the notebook later by selecting on the File tab at the top left in OneNote, then choosing the Share option.

Step 5

If you selected Invite People, invite the email addresses of those who you wish to invite, provide a short personal message, and leave the option as "Can Edit" for your professor and group members.

NOTE: All of your peers should create Outlook.com email accounts if they do not already have one and you should share the notebook with that account. Please confirm accuracy of the email accounts of your peers to avoid sharing the notebook with someone who it should not be shared with.

Step 6

Go to the Open menu option to open the notebook that you just created. You may have to scroll to find the notebook if you are an existing user of OneNote and have several other notebooks.

You will be taken to this page where you can begin adding content. To learn more about how to add content, visit these tutorials.

A sample RFP homepage and section might be organized as the examples that are shown.

TIP: It is recommended that you create your content in Word and other appropriate document creation apps depending on the type of content that you are entering, then import the file into the OneNote section and page that you have created using the File Printout option. Creating content directly in OneNote can present formatting issues for this type of assignment and will likely cause your project to look less professional.

FINAL NOTE: To help organize your project, it's a good idea for the project manager or her/his designee to use OneDrive (same location where the RFP that you create is saved) to organize the files that each of your group members will be creating in association with this project.  Learn more about OneDrive.
