How to Take Care of College Issued Devices

Proper Use of College-Issued Devices

To properly care for college-issued technology resources, here are a few tips to aid in that effort:

  1. Use the provided laptop bag or sleeve for storing the device when not in use in order to keep equipment secure and protected.
  2. When using the provided case or sleeve, avoid placing in extra items that might cause undue pressure/weight to the delicate components (e.g., touchscreen).
  3. Never place heavy items on top of the device or have the laptop situated on unstable surfaces to prevent hardware damage.
  4. If possible, use non-abrasive electronic wipes to clean screen and keyboard.  Canned Air can also be used to clear away any debris from the keypad.
  5. When using the power adapter to charge the laptop, make certain that the tip is securely affixed to the device, unplugging when fully charged. This ensures that the battery is always charged and being properly cycled.  Avoid bending the charging tip, as this could cause damage to the cable or port on the device.
  6. Try to avoid spills of any kind as this may render the laptop unusable. In the event that accidents do occur, disconnect the power cord and promptly clean the spill, turning the device upside-down to prevent internal damage.
  7. Never place objects (e.g., pens or books) between the screen and keyboard to prevent screen or keyboard damage.  Avoid blunt force or scratches to the laptop surface and touchscreen.
  8. Make every effort to protect the device from extreme hot or cold temperatures.
