How to Create a Hypothesis Assignment

What is Hypothesis?

Hypothesis is a social annotation tool that is fully integrated with Canvas. Using Hypothesis, instructors can have students annotate document and videos.  Students can annotate collaboratively, sharing comments and replying to comments from others. Instructors can also make these annotations into graded assignments. Through Hypothesis assignments, students submit their annotations for feedback and grading in Canvas.  Watch this short video about Creating an Hypothesis PDF module item in Canvas.

To create a Hypothesis assignment in Canvas follow the below instructions:

• Locate the Module where you would like to add the assignment.
• Click on the + sign in the upper right-hand corner, then Add Assignment, Create Assignment.
• Give the assignment a name, then click Add Item.
• Click on the assignment to open and edit.
  • Add instructions to the content area, such as below.
• Assign the number of points, put the assignment in the appropriate group, and decide how the grades will be displayed.
• Change the Submission Type to External Tool.  
• Click on Find and search for Hypothesis.

• Click on Hypothesis and hit Select.

  
• Find the text you would like to use and select one of the options below.
• 

  Then highlight Hypothesis again and click on Select.

• 

  On the Assignment Instructions page, click on Load this Tool in a new tab (for the best view for the students), then Save and Publish.

  
• The final view will look like the one below. Switch to the Student View to see what the assignment looks like for students​​​​​​ and to test it.
