This article will take students through the steps for getting started with your course in Canvas.
Step 1
Complete eLearning Smart Start
All first-time online, structured remote, and hybrid students are highly encouraged to complete eLearning Smart Start, which will help you gain the essential information needed to be successful. eLearning Smart Start contains information on:
- Basics of online learning and classes
- Student responsibilities and requirements
- How to determine if your computer has minimum hardware and software requirements
- Learning and technical skills you will need to be a successful student
- How to log in and use Canvas
- Virtual campus resources for students
Step 2
Set Up Your Owl Mail Account
You must set up your Owl Mail account. If you have not set up your account, please do so now by visiting the Owl Mail (Student Email) New User Activation instructions. Once your class begins, the ONLY way the college and your instructor are allowed to communicate with you is through your Owl Mail account and all email sent through Canvas goes to your Owl Mail account.
- If you have an existing Hotmail account, you MUST sign out of your Hotmail account in order to log in and view your Owl Mail email.
- If you will be outside of the United States during your class, submit a Remove International Travel Restrictions ticket.
Step 3
Access Your Classes Through Canvas
Online, structured remote, and hybrid classes are conducted through Canvas, the college's learning management system. You must have your Owl Link account set up in order to access Canvas. Use your Owl Link username and password to log into Canvas. Please note that Owl Mail (your student email) is different than Owl Link.
You can access Canvas in two ways:
You will be able to access your class(es) in Canvas four calendar days prior to the start date of the class. For example, if the class begins on December 13th, students will be able to log in and see their class on December 9th. You can login to Canvas before this date, but you cannot access your course until 4 days before the start date.
If you are uncertain about the exact start date of your class, please check Owl Link or visit the Online Class Schedules page on the eLearning website.
Join us for a Canvas Overview Session to gain an understanding of the learning management system. The session will include information on basic features, a review of a course layout, and how to access 24/7 support.
Step 4
Prepare Your Technology
Ensure you have the technology you need to be successful. Complete the following before the first day of your online classes:
If you need technical assistance with your class in Canvas:
- While logged into Canvas, click on the Help icon in the left menu to open the eLearning Support Center and access the email, call, and chat options at the bottom of the pane.
- If you cannot log into your Canvas account or need assistance with an issue unrelated to Canvas, please request help at ask.pgcc.edu
Step 5
Keep in Mind
Online, structured remote, and hybrid classes require your time, effort, and commitment similar to traditional, face-to-face classes. It is important that you log in to your class(es) as soon as available so that you can begin your classwork. After logging into your class(es), contact your instructor with questions.
