How to Capture Your Screen

Capturing your computer screen is an essential competency in a technologically-advanced world.  There are a couple of ways to do so:

  1. Use your keyboard and a desktop application as described in this article.
  2. Use the Snipping Tool.
  3. Download and use Jing for free along with these Jing tutorials for instructions.*

*Jing is recommended since you can easily add call-outs without needing to open another application.

Please note that you should always be mindful of copyright and capturing items that are okay to capture and do not violate copyright restrictions.

Step 1

Open the screen that you wish to capture.

Note: If you have dual monitors, be sure to click somewhere on the screen of the monitor that you wish to capture.

Step 2

Simultaneously hold down the Control (CTRL) + ALT + Print Screen (PrtScn) buttons on your keyboard.

Step 3

Hold down CTRL + V on your keyboard or right-click with your mouse and choose the paste option while in the document, application, or location where you would like to paste the image.
