Dropout Detective helps colleges turn Canvas data into an early-warning system. It is a program from AspirEDU that integrates directly with Canvas to provide a “risk index” of how likely it is that each student in online, hybrid, and remote courses will drop out or fail their DL, HY, RD, and RE course(s). The program analyzes past and current engagement in Canvas to predict future performance. Additionally, this program compiles the different reasons the student is at risk and makes it easy to quickly review what might be happening with the student and determine an intervention strategy.
Goals
- Identify at-risk students by understanding the Risk Index, trends, and warning indicators.
- Help faculty analyze engagement by reviewing the student's profile and identifying reasons for risk.
- Help student support staff determine intervention strategies by contacting the student and referring them to resources.
Objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify At-Risk Students
- Explain the purpose of the Risk Index and risk indicators.
- Interpret risk levels and trends to identify students who may need support.
- Recognize common warning signs of declining student engagement and performance.
- Analyze Student Engagement
- Navigate the student profile to review academic performance and engagement data.
- Examine student activity, grades, submissions, and other indicators contributing to risk.
- Use available data to determine potential reasons a student may be at risk.
- Determine Intervention Strategies
- Identify appropriate intervention strategies based on a student's risk factors.
- Contact students using appropriate outreach and support strategies.
- Refer students to appropriate academic or student support resources.
- Monitor Student Progress
- Monitor changes in a student's risk level and engagement over time.
- Evaluate whether interventions are resulting in improved student engagement and progress.

- Dropout Detective 101 Course – This asynchronous online course in Canvas will share what the tool is and how you can use it to support students. Completing it will help you learn how to access Dropout Detective, how to navigate your dashboard, and how to interpret students’ risk scores. Email eLearning@pgcc.edu to request access.
