Ally for Canvas Training Plan

Body

Purpose: Improve course content accessibility in Canvas and provide alternative formats for students.

Goals

  • Faculty and staff will have access to 'just in time' training and resources for understanding and using Ally within Canvas.
  • Faculty will be able to interpret Ally accessibility scores and take action to improve them.
  • Faculty will have access to in-person and online synchronous training options.
  • Faculty will be able to provide students with accessible alternative format documents in their courses.

Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify common accessibility issues flagged by Ally in Canvas course content.
  • Interpret Ally course accessibility score reports and prioritize remediation.
  • Use Ally's guided remediation tools to fix accessibility issues in uploaded files.
  • Add and improve alternative text for images in Canvas.
  • Ensure uploaded PDFs and documents are accessible using Ally's guidance.
  • Explain how students access alternative format downloads from Canvas.

Training Delivery Methods

In Person

Improving Your Course Accessibility Score (3 hours)

A hands-on workshop for faculty focused on using Ally to improve Canvas course accessibility scores. Topics include updating PDFs, adding headers, and remediating common accessibility issues.

Accessibility Fundamentals (4 hours)

A comprehensive introduction to digital accessibility for faculty and staff covering key principles, tools, and best practices for creating accessible digital content.

Online Synchronous (Zoom/Teams)

  • Ensuring Accessibility with Ally (1 hour) - An online workshop where faculty learn how Ally works in Canvas, how to view accessibility scores, and strategies for improving course content accessibility.
  • Accessibility Fundamentals (2 hours) - An online synchronous workshop covering digital accessibility principles and how to create accessible Word documents and PDFs.
  • On Demand (Self-paced modules)
  • Ally for Canvas Video Resources - Self-paced video modules covering Ally features, accessibility score interpretation, and remediation guidance for Canvas instructors.
  • Canvas Premium Training: Fundamentals of Accessible Digital Content - Available through the Canvas training portal. Faculty learn POUR principles and best practices for images, files, and course materials.
